win2k won't shut down with usb device

Hello,
Been a while since I have posted, been busy and all. Any way I have a win2k system. I need to update home computer so please excuse old specs. Home brewed box 1.4 AMD 40 wd gig hdd, 512mb pc100 ram, cd rom and burner, IWill266plus mother board not using raid. System runs well and never have many probs. I had to get a new printer and its a usb connect. Espon C-64. What happens is when I go to shut down it won't. It hangs after shutting down everything, then when the power would turn off it trys to restart. It will not restart. It starts a loop of shut down, then once it has reached the place where the last thing is to turn off power it tries to start up again. My machine will countine this untill i use my power button and turn it off. If i use restart it will restart like usall no probs. It seems to me I had this prob with win98 yrs ago, and can't remember now but maybe even win2k. Can't rember how i resolved. I can turn off printer and it will shut down, but don't want to do that.. In my bios i had one of the two usb ports off and tried it with both on but no luck.. Any ideas. I rember I think reading some times ago in this fourm but can not rember where or how long ago. Any help would be appericated.

Thanks Sterling

The first thing that pops into my mind is the "5v sb" voltage of the power supply. Thats the 5v "standby voltage".....it may or may not have to do with that problem but....look anyway and see what your power supply has for that voltage if its 1a that is kind of low..2a or more is better. (1a=1 amp etc)

other than that, have you got all the latest updates and patches and latest drivers?

Another thought that possibly could make a difference....in the bios, see if you have "assign IRQ for usb"...maybe try that.

If none of that works...I bet if you checked out microsofts "knowledge base" youd find something.

If my computer is off and my HP printer is on, when I shut off the printer, the computer will start and boot normaly.

Does that printer draw any power from the USB port?

Not sure if printer draws power or not. It does have its own plug for wall power. Voltage is looking lile it always does and I have checked bios all looking well there as well

Probably doesn't draw from the USB then, but i'd look at the printer power light and see if it blinks when your computer restarts to be sure.

on the label on the side of your power supply...what does it list for the current of the "5v sb"? I bet its 1A.

you ever had a usb printer on this comp before? (if so, did you uninstall it? or just unplug it?)

no, the psu of the comp, lol...where it lists all the different voltages..it'll have "5v sb" or "5vsb"...I am thinking the standby voltage is also used for usb..maybe I am wrong there.

You never said if you have the latest service packs etc either....service packs tend to fix a lot of stuff.

Do you have another psu you could possibly boot with just to see if it makes a difference? I guess the one in there is a 300watter? or maybe 250?

also. do you have the latest bios?
