Dead Pixels on CRT?

I don't think it's possible to get actual dead pixels on a CRT (is it?) but that's what it looks like is happening to mine. It's a 5-7 year old TTX 17" CRT. For some reason, starting resently, the pixels at the extreme bottom of the screen have gone black. It looks like my taskbar is cut off a bit because of this and it's very noticable. It began in the lower right-hand corner but it's spreading across the whole bottom and now occurs across 75% of the screen at the very bottom.

Is my monitor taking a toss? Any way to fix this/save it?

We had about 10 TTX monitors at my job... 5 to 7 years for them is good.. most of them gave up the ghost around 4 to 5 years...

2 words... Toss It.

cheaper to buy a new monitor now a days them to fix one.

Sounds like the guns at athe back of the tube are croaking.
Try changing refresh rates to see if it it helps for the time being...you might be able to coax a couple more months out of it.
If not, round-bin it.

Its not the guns..its the phosphor that the inside face of the tube is coated in..when electrons strike a dot-area it lights up red-green or blue..usually in a triangle shape...when the phosphor begins to die, it no longer illuminates when the electrons hit it.

There is no fix except to replace the CRT..which would cost as much as two new monitors...chunk it.

fyi...

the original poster said the dead area had gradually increased. if that is true, then it is not a phosphor problem but more than likely, it is something to do w/the gun assembly or the electronics controlling the gun focusing.

I have been working with crt's all my life and I can say I have never seen the syptems your discribeing being the fault of the crt.
the phrospher just does not go bad that way, but you could be the one in a million too.
it sounds like the monitor is going bad, but it would be in the vertical deflection of the electron beam that is causeing the problem.
yes a replacement is in order as it will keep getting worst as time goes on till it dies completely.

Well, trying to fix it would be big bucks, to ditch it and get a new one

I've never heard of pixels in a CRT becoming bad in use, except from screen burn, and I don't think that happens much at the edges. But once a pixel goes bad it stays bad.

Has your picture shrunk? I'm pretty sure that it has because a lot of times when CRT monitors age their electrolytic capacitors go bad and cause the vertical to sweep less or a power supply voltage to drop. There are a lot of experts in sci.electronics.repair who would know for sure how to fix this.

it would be very easy to tell you excatly what is wrong if you could just post a picture of what your discribing.
it also could be that the vert deflection circut could need adjusting.
the vert size and linerity, usally a vert deflectiom problem will shoow up at the bottom of the screen first, commonly known as foldover when a electrlitic is getting week, also a output transistor can show the symption too,
