If you check out my article here our fellow TIMO member posted this (in case you don't want to read the article/look at the comments)

I would like to point out something before anyone gets burned buying the 9600SE hoping it will be a Pro. Make sure the serial number on the top of the box begins with 180339 or 180336, otherwise you'll get an SE. (Just bought mine today and am quite happy to get this card for such a good price.)

I do not know the validity of this post any more as since it has been posted on the fourth of November.

And another member, diffy posted this

I purchased a Radeon 9600SE at BestBuy. It's serial number starts with 180346 and it's not a pro.
3DMark03 says: VGA Memory Clock 195.7 MHz VGA Core Clock 324.0 MHz

I get 1663 Winmarks but I only have a 1.4GHz Athlon (overclocked) so I'm sure that's hurting the scores.

Fill Rate (Single-Texturing) 322.4 MTexels/s Fill Rate (Multi-Texturing) 1047.8 MTexels/s
It's all trial and error. You have better luck purchasing a whole bunch from a local B&M store like Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Fry's, et al. and checking the serial numbers.

Good luck

i think what hes saying is that if you buy a Pro, look at the serial, i mean if you buy a 9600SE it says it right on the box, and if you buy a PRO it also says it on the box

Seriel #'s are on the cards PCB. Not on retail box. Some se's are other cards remarked. Thats there point I beleive. Like my Sapphire 9800NP. Is really a BBA (Built By ATI). Its all told by the seriel #'s.

Right on, that's why some 9800 NP's can be flashed into the 9800 Pro.
