In one word yes. You actually don't have to take out the cd rom drive to add a cdr drive if you have only one device on that IDE channel. Just make sure that the cd rom drive is master and set the cdr drive as slave on the same channel and you should be good to go.

In other word keep the same cd rom, which is the ony one on the system because there is no other slot to install a cdr. And change the bio to slave and i would be able to use it as a cdr?

Simply remove your old drive, check the jumper on your new drive and make sure it is set to master, and reinstall in the same slot and it should work great!

If there is only one slot for your cd rom then you will have to replace it with your cd recorder. There are 2 maybe 3 connections going into the back of your cd rom: 1. A white plug with red, yellow, and black wires. This is the power connector. 2. A thin wide gray cable with a black plug. This is your ide cable. 3. If there is a small round gray cable this is for playing CDs and connects to either your motherboard or sound card.
Disconnect the cords going into the back of your cd rom. Remove the screws holding your cd rom in place. Remove the cd rom. Install the cd recorder in the empty slot. Install the screws to hold in place. Reconnect cords in the back of the cd recorder.
Your done.

There is another set of 6 pins beside the ide connector. This is where you set the drive as master, slave or cable select. Most cd drives come preset as master. You might want to double check to be sure that it is set as master. It will say on the drive which pins are which.
