Lappy DooG

DOOg done did it !

After canceling an order for a $900 single-spindle <3 ib. Laptop, the Doog ordered an ACER TravelMate 291 for about $1,300.

Has usual DVD/CD-RW module, parrallel port (nice touch !), S-VHS port for TV, dual-screen capable --but uses untergrated Video Ram (Yuccho ! ).

15" screen and 6 lb. weight.

Here is the deal clincher: Comes with TWO YEAR Warrentee. So da DOOG saves on usual 3 yr. $exten$ion !

512 DDR memory in one slot and a second slot free. Another nice feature !

Firewire, USB 2.0 +legacy ports, except serial.

Passed over a wide-screen Toshiba (same price) with 15.4" screen and one year warentee. Only 256 Mb RAM. Same weight.

Did da DOOG do the right thing with the ACER ?

Pa-leeze!
I gots to know !

DOOG needs to post CPU speed!
I'm not very fond with Acer, bad experiences.

Lappy is a 1.4 Mhz Pentium -M. Centrino with b-wireless..

Intended for both me and da Boss Caat.

Weight becomes an issue only when walking--as in CA Mall-ratting. Not an issue in hotel/relatives house, or when driving to places. Until one gets outta car ,,..

Yeah, like to find a 3 ib. Lappy --but most are $2,500 +. Cheapest are older Win2KPro P-IIIM at $1,500 for 12" screen.

John Prester is referring to "Single-spindle <3lb.." Thread where I gave up on Lappy that had only a hard-drive on board for $900 for <3lbs. Memory was fixed at 256Mb and needed external peripherals to load anything.

Limited feature envelope is a trade-off. More $moolah for less computer to half the weight. Don't wanna spend on Toshiba Porteges or skinny Sony Vaios. Yuccho $2,000 plus to $3,000.

Here's the linkey

http://computers4sure.com/Product.as...794035&iid=342

Biggest drawback:intergrated video

Toshiba m30-...has discrete 32 Mbs of VidMemory, SecureDigital slot, and widescreen for <$1,400. Hard to find in stock. One year warrentee. Uses AthlonM and g-wireless.

DK how hard it is to service ACER warrentee.
I think ACER TravelMate line is relatively new.
Call it ACER -? ?

Hmm..could wait until get to CA and eat the Sales tax. Everything Computer seems to get taxed in CA ! But want to transfer files here in NYC and leave back-up CD'Rs here.

Prices are Yuccho at Fry's --unless you get lucky.

I dont know about Acer...1.4 M processor will give you about 3 hour battery life on a full charge <depending on what you are doing>. I still recommend Toshiba...too many good things said about them.

Dont all lappies have integrated video??? I have not seen one yet that has an actual video card.

I like the single 512 mb RAM with the second slot to add to. Nice touch. FireWire is nice too...is it the 6 pin firewire port or the smaller 5 or 4 pin?

What does the 2 year warrantee cover? Guessing prolly just MFG. defects.

Here's the linky on the Toshiba M30 series

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...=toshiba%2Cm30

I ordered one and NewEgg said the bank wouldn't verify my address as its confidential so I had to call my bank except it's impossible to call this 3 day weekend and I was in a hurry, so I cancelled. crazy, huh ?

Maybe I can pull something Monday, a national holiday to get it moving.

NewEgg don't sell extended warrentee on these, so I would have to go to Toshiba for that. DK the price and most likely they do 3 year only.

AWOOOOOOOOOO !

The Video is either intergrated (run by chipset, using system memory) OR its "discrete", "installed" etc, which uses seperate VRAM. I assume the Mobo also has a seperate GPU installed on some, even if no Video card proper.

da DooG FINALLY did it !

Ok, here's the story:

Got crazy tired over this and with internet verificatins of my Kennel and NY Detention Pound not wanting to admit my residence so I hopped a Cab, went to CompUSa and bought the one I originaaly wanted---or a version of it.

Toshiba Satelite M35 --S3592

This is the same as M35-S359 sold www.newegg,com

Except it has 256Mbs RAM and 40G HDD.

Url too long at ww.compusa.com
but you can search Stellite M35 --S3592

I also got the 3 year CompUSA __I hope they do what they promise --which includes walk-in service nationwide, a free-replacement batterry, and screen protection (Huh ? Isn't that warrenteed by other Co's?). NewEgg don't sell Extended warrentee.

I liked the discrete 32 Mb VRAM (rather than shared) and nVidia FX GO 5200 video chipset. Also wide 5.4" widescreen and 6.2 lbs with Secure Digital slot.

Whole price was $1,500 PLUS tax

Decent price . I made a deal about having trouble on Inet but would solve and how it was a ONE Minute Sale for them:

Most Laptop customers there need to be "sold", waste 1/2 hr. of Salesperson's time --and often just walk.

Walking in and saying, "sell me this BUT at LOwer price and I'm outta here in 30 secs". may have help give me some price leverage.

Anyhow, wish me luck.!

Yeah, yeah, I know what ome of you are thinking: "Ugg ! That means da DOOG will be posting incomprehensible stuff from any Wi-Fi "hotspoT'

yeah, and thanks for any opinions about the Toshiba and the 3 yr Warrentee ! Anybody have one from CompUSA ?
