Kids Laptop Combo Drive - Not Recognized

Hello everyone,

I got my hands on a Lite-On CD/CDRW/DVD combo drive, model LSC-24082K, for my Gateway 2000 Solo 9300 laptop. I'm running Windows 98SE. This drive is not recognized by my system at all. I have two other drives, a Torisan DRD-U424 which it recognizes just fine, and the original CD/CDRW drive that came with it which it recognizes just fine. Device Manager doesn't even show a drive when the Lite-On is installed, and neither does Windows Explorer.

Any ideas?? Thanks!!

Hmm, does your BIOS recognize it?
see if it does, I'm not sure of the button, but at start up press either DEL, F1 or F2 when it says gateway at boot to get to BIOS.

If it is not listed, then it probably isn't connected correctly or it is not compatable with your laptop.

This may be related to the OS (as implemented on your machine) and not the BIOS. If that's the case your options are limited. With a 9300 you don't really have enough horsepower for XP which is the recommended solution. Upgrading to Win ME might allow the system to see the drive.

LSC-24082K not recognized by Win98

Do you have 2 IDE channels? The drive comes set default slave. Your other drives probably come set Cable select. There is a utlity to set the device to CS (cable Select).. This is how we have got the drive to work with older laptop units and Win98SE

John,

This is not an external drive, it fits into the internal drive bay of the laptop. And this laptop soes support type II.

Absolutely not. PCMCIA card "types" are about the physical thickness of the card insert, nothing else. This is not about compatibility at all, only about whether it'll fit or not. Type I is 3mm high, Type II is 5 mm, and Type III occupies the height of two slots, 10 mm.
