Kids help! AN35 Ultra AMD 2500 heat or voltage?

First of all, a big kiss my a-- to my university's computer repair lab for what to charge me $200 to install my new mobo and CPU and shepard data over from a VIA board.

Did it myself and learned how to do it on this board.

But....

Computer shuts down occasionally after about ten minutes of running. My guess is I put on Arctic Silver 3 too lightly and maybe need to lap my heatsink (Volcano 7+)....

However, I don't know what normal voltage level I should be running....and I am suspicious because I can only run my CPU up to 1900 with following specs from the BIOS

133MHZ

Aggressive timings

CPU voltage 1.63-1.64
AGP 1.52-1.53
3.3 v 3.29-3.31
+5 5.08-5.10
+12 11.64-11.71
-12 -11.35-11.45
Chipset 1.68
5v 4.94-4.99
voltage 3.08-3.10

system 26 c
cpu 49-50 c
pwm 29 c

hsf 6026rpm
fans 2
HD fan 1

temp has climbed to 60 c in past but that was on most stable setting. bumping to aggressive lets me run at 133mhz. Plus it's cold as a witch's tit right now...

Do these voltage numbers see right? What are others running, any suggestions if I go into expert

Barton 2500

Nanya chipset (Dane-Elec) PC2100 6-3-3

refurbed gainward geforce 3 ti 200 stock fan not OC'd 1 month and no problems so far

maxtor 80 gb drive

allied 420W

When I bump to 166mhz computer shuts down even in BIOS right after updating. Bumped shutdown temp to 65 c and i prefer 60 c...

Suggestions...suggested settings if go to expert?

How bout reducing the aggressive settings and see if stability improves?
Doesnt appear to be hot unless you are reaching that point and your shutdown command kicks in...
Try 166 with your most relaxed mem timings, make sure your voltages are correct---probably an increased ASIII application and lapping wont change things...

The default is 1.65v, which is what it looks like it is set at.

I would say that lapping your HSF is not going to make that big of a difference, not even necessary. I would also say reapplying AC3 might not be a bad idea. You don't need much though. It could just be your HSF isn't seated very well. Try installing the CPU again w/ fresh AC3. After that, go into the BIOS and 'Restore Defaults'. Does that board have jumpers or does it do all the settings from the BIOS?

UH, On my shuttle mobo, in the PC Health page of the BIOS, the shutdown temp was set to Disabled by default.

It shut down at temps in the 50's at the setting. Changing the setting to 60C fixed the problem.

Setting choices: 60c,65C,70C, disabled.

computer will not take the 166mhz setting. will shut down immediately.

that's the problem. that's why i am posting. raised temp won't change what's happening. it's shutting down faster than time needed to get to temp which would shut it down.

hmm, isn.t that ram only rated 133??, don't you need 2700 ram to get 166 fsb? i could be wrong

... but i'm not. pc2100 is rated 266 which is 133fsb... to get that barton at legit 2500 speeds u need higher rated ram (2700 at least). Also, the temps u are complaining about are not bad. AMD says max temp for correct operation of 2500+ is 80c, so the 70c shutoff is fine. Also,also... Running at 60-70c temps will shorten life a bit on cpu, but normal lifespan should be 8-12 yrs, so even if you only get 7 yrs out of it, it would be sooooo obsolete it really shouldn't matter!

Make sure the heatsink is seated properly. Look at this thread:
