Kids Do you "need" the Sony I-Link 4pin to 4 pin cable?

Hi there

Recently have bought a Sony DCR-TRV250E handycam and would like to do a bit of video editing on the computer. I'm currently using the USB connector but was wondering how to go about upgrading to a Firewire connection? The Sony specs are that you need their 4 pin to 4 pin I-link (ieee1394) cable.....I also need to get a card. The proprietry Sony cable costs $49 aussie bucks alone and I then assume I need to get the card.
Dick Smiths is selling IEEE 1394 card and cable kits for $58. As long as the cable that came with it plugged into the 4 pin on the camera, would it make any difference if it isn't a Sony?

Any help more than welcome

Its firewire. THing is Apple ownes firewire name. So most use the jdec spec. IEE1394. Sony likes to dumb it donw for consumers. So they called it i-Link. Same thing as F wire (but no royaltie fees) and easier to understand for most then IEE1394. So your noraml Fwire card + Firewire B (4 not 6 wire) cord will be 100% perfect. I too have a handycam so I know firsthand.

It works. Does your computer support USB 2.0? Unless you have an Apple system, your IEE1394 is version A and runs at 400Mhz. Version B runs at twice that speed, but is currently not available for PCs. Anyway, if you have USB 2.0, it will stream at 480.
