Computer Dating: M598 MB & Celeron 500MHz: is it love?

Greetings Tekkies,

Rummaging through the candy store of old computer parts, I have come into possession of a PC Chips M598 on the one hand,
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/M598.html
http://kriston.net/hardware/m598.shtml
and an Intel Celeron 500MHz on the other.
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=FV524RX500

The first order of business was to Flash the M598's BIOS with the latest and best BIOS, which has been successfully done.
http://www.stud.fernuni-hagen.de/q39...ML/000729.html

Next was to look up the background on the potential mates:

According to this website, I *think* it can be done, but I am still uncertain.
http://users.erols.com/chare/cpu_sock.htm#socket7

The Celeron, after all, is a Socket 370 CPU and the M598 is a 'Super?' Socket 7 board. I have an AMD 300MHz which I can drop in for the time being, but a French website tells us that this particular Celeron can be OC'ed up to 625 MHz:
http://www.hardware.fr/myocdb.com/fiche6133.html

QUESTION

Before I send voltage coursing through the matched set and risking frying them in a nanosecond, can anyone direct me to a URL or two showing that the M598 and the Celeron 500MHz are compatible?

If so, are there any voltage setttings, etc. that I should be aware of?

Many thanks,

KJ

If you can find one of the adapters it might be possible. Doing a google throws up only that page that you linked to.
I really doubt you'll manage this.
The adapters in question are like the overdrive chips you'd still pay well over the odds for even a slow one. Not worth it.

A Socket 370 CPU (Pentium II or Celeron) won't work in a Socket 7 or Super Socket 7 motherboard. A Super Socket 7 board is basically just a Socket 7 with support for an ATX power supply, the standard ATX I/O ports (mouse, keyboard, USB, etc), AGP and a 100Mhz FSB.

The Celeron you have is a budget Pentium II CPU which won't work in any (original) Pentium MMX board and there is no adapter that will make it work. You can use a Socket 370 HSF on a Socket 7 CPU (Pentium 233 MMX, K6-2, K6-III, etc.) though.

Edit: Hmm... just read the info in the link you provided and it claims PowerLeap makes an adapter that will allow to run a Celeron (Pentium II based) or Pentium III on a SS7 board. That doesn't look right... maybe try the PowerLeap site and see if you can find out more.

Thanks for the heads-up fellas.

Went ahead and dropped in an AMD K6-2/500MHz. Now I have a virtual living museum of older machines, smoothly running AMD CPU's. No major complaints as of yet after flashing their respective BIOS's. I've put the Celeron back in storage for the time being.

The K6-2 500 is ABOUT as far as you can go with a super socket 7.

The celeron needs a socket 370 board...and to be honest, they are getting a little hard to find now...especially if you have a P3...with a 500 celly it isnt QUITE as hard to find a socket 370 board (some socket 370 boards only use cellys and not p3's etc..so P3 boards are harder to find)
