p4 3.0 running hot

ive got a 3.0c and the temp at idle is somewhere in the mid 50sC. ive got 2 case fans and stock heatsink and fan. I think it might be the thermal paste cause the stuff that came on the heatsink looked pretty nasty and thick. Also ive been running like this for about 3 weeks and wonder if that could of hurt the processor. any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Well it can run that temp, but I think the stock hsf maybe the cause. Stock fans aren't made to cool all that well, they usually end up performing as well as they need to before burning up your processor. Which is usually acceptable.
You could always try arctic silver and maybe get a new HSF if your worried about it. Especially if it get's above 60c on full load. It would be best to get the temp down.

I had a P4 3.06ghz CPU. It ran 50-55C. I changed my power supply to one that has multipul fans Built in. I also changed to a cooler master heatsink/fan. This got the temps down to 40-45C.

IMO, the first thing you could do to determine whether or not it's a problem with the heatsink and/or thermal compound, is to take a side panel off and see how much your temps drop.
Having two case fans doesn't necessarily mean you have good airflow through your case.

No thermal paste? I'm surprised you're running at that temperature. I know people who have fried processors because they didn't use any paste. But then again they were AMDs....

Stock cooler is copper filled and thermally controlled and actually performs real well, has a thick blackish pad called a TIM if you dont use it your warranty is void if thats a concern, it also has/had a plastic protective coating, did you remove that before seating it?

Where are you reading the temp from?

Try this 500watt Achieve. I have one myself and just recently installed another into a new build. It has been very stable.

My specs:
2.4GHz Intel Pentium 4C
Abit IS7
2x256MB Corsair TwinMX PC3200
Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB

Voltage readings:
+3.3v @ 3.34
+5v @ 5.16
+12v @ 11.92

You could get additional information here.
