The 1.7 Celeron uses the P4 478 Pin socket so a 2.8 will fit. I'm not sure if your board will support it.

Don't forget that if you do end up replacing your motherboard then you will have to purchase a video card also unless you get another board with integraded video.

any suggestions as to find out how i can see if my board supports it would be great.

I already have a new gfx card, that shouldnt be a problem.

Its just the chip itself costs alot and a board would up the price by another, what 60 pounds? i dont really know.

If i was to get a new board, do i need a new case aswell?

It appears that the max FBS for your machine is 400. A2.8 CELERON will fit as long as the 1.7 you want to replace is a P4 478 pin. NOW you need to search the link you gave to the online Tech and find out if your board will support a 2.8 Celeron.

You case is a Micro ATX so as long as you get a micro atx board it should work. Personally I would buy a new case. You can pick up a decent case with a power supply at tigerdirect.com for pretty cheap. You might even be able to get a barebones kit with a motherboard also.

uh, so thats a no to the pentium 4 idea then?
because it needs a higher fsb?

how cheap could i get away with, in terms of a mobo?

My pc has 640mb ram and me new gfx card. so i think the processor is leing me down in terms of it doing stuff quickly. And playing games of course.

If you are looking to save some money here is a barebones kit with a case, mobo, and power supply. It will support the CPU you are looking at buying.

Barebones

Try limeyPCs.com :-)

For a few bucks more you can get something pretty. Or you can just buy some spray paint.

that limey thing is non existant.
