Power Switch shutdown instead of hard-off?

I've tried doing a search for this but haven't had any luck... I have an MSI 865PE Neo2 Motherboard and a Thermaltake XaserII case (Running XP Pro). I am trying to get my computer to shut down and turn off when I do the "Turn off Computer" from the Start menu or, if I press the power button on the computer. Right now, if I shut down via the start menu it goes through the shutdown sequence then comes up with that "It is now safe to turn off your computer message" and waits for me to press the power button. Likewise if I press the power button on the case the system shuts off as if you flipped a switch. I've built several PCs for other people and all will do the proper shutdown when the power button is pressed, so I am having a little trouble figuring out what I need to change in order to get this to work. I have a feeling it's something in XP since this has been the case with both my current MB (the MSI) and my old DFI AK70 (Athlon) board. I should also mention that I have also had two different cases an Inwin and the Thermaltake and it did the same thing with both cases as well.

Thanks,
Wes

Yes, that is a problem from within XP...Win98 and 98SE (ME too??) were having much of the same. M$ actually put out a patch for 98SE to fix it.

It has something to do with ACPI? (I think) and/or power management in the BIOS..most ppl turn power management off. also, seems like I remember reading about disabling PnP OS in the BIOS too.

Somebody will come along with the straight help for you soon.. I have never actually had this problem myself..but then, I refuse to run XP either..

I've seen some computers that actually had a setting in the Control Panel to enable/disable automatic shutdown. Does this one?

Only an ACPI Computer can shut itself down.

Even if you have hardware that can do this.... if the ACPI power mode is disabled in the motherboard BIOS when Windows is initially installed then it's possible Windows will install with only the Standard PC option.

Check your device manager for the correct PC type. You can reselect the correct PC type once ACPI is enabled in your BIOS.

Backup you data before trying this, just in case. You may have to revert to last known good config if the change produces a blue screen (i.e. wrong type selected for your hardware)

I've attahced two screen caps from my PC as an example - don't actually select the mulitprocessor option unless you have a multiprocessor system. You'll probably want to select the "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC" option.

I had to reinstall OS to get ACPI working after enabling in bios. If i disable in bios after os setup it wont even boot till re-enabled. So I think even though it should just switch on. It dont work that way most times.
