an update on an old problem
a while ago i posted a prob here concerning my xp home os. It seemed when I turned the comp on and clicked on my comp it'd show the desktop, also to open any links in IE i'd have to right click and open in new window, there is a strange drumming sound when i do so. This goes away after awhile but when the comp is first turned on it's a prob as i'm not able to get to any files. I called microsoft and used my last "help me" for free, they ran me few somethings and ended by saying it was a hardware prob because it worked itself out after awhile (theory was it gets hot et cetera), said they had never heard of any probs like i'm having either. The funny thing is I had rebooted so many times with the tech support that when I hung up it was a fresh restart, and i left my comp alone, came back hours later and had same probs, it's not a hardware obviously as heating up isn't what is curing it but repeating the same action i think, their advice was to reinstall the OS to make sure it was hardware issue.... tyhought I share this with all, will be sending my mobo in as sound has never worked, so will probably reinstall OS while i'm at it, will keep you all updated...

could you please post your system spects to help analize this
have you run spybot and adaware to remove all that garbage and do a good virous scan
also I would run a good memtest program.
what are you temps setting at?

I was gonna put a link up to the old thread, but when I looked through it I noticed it didn't have specs, anyways
mobo asusa7n8x deluxe 2.0
proc= amd athlon xp 2500 barton +
mem= crucial 512mb 2700
os= xp home
have done a mem test, ran spybot, AVG, norton... norton seemed to have wroked at one time but it didn't last, ran something in dos that said it wasn't a hardware issue (suggested by MS) checked all drivers for updates, temp is in low 70's, that's all i can remember right now

HOLY CRAP!!! or HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!! I finally got around to downloading adaware, I had spybot s &d, norton and AVG, but I was bored, so I download it, run it after S&D to see if it picks anything up and it did, 3 registry probs, I fix them and it seems to have fixed every prob I have had with this system, keep your fingers crossed for me, but the probs listed here, as well as some with my keyboard, and even my sound I think (not positive yet, have to test it more), this is great if it stays like this as I won't have to send anything back. GREAT PROGRAM, I never would have thought an ad would screw my system like that..... crazy, sorry I didn't listen earlier when it was suggested I download that.... thanks all, and if things start to go wrong I'll update, but looking good right now.......

well that was short lived, everything worked fine this morning, then when i got back this afternoon I had a whole set of different probs, i.e. when i clicked a link it would automatically open a new window, my keyboard didn't work correctly, my cursor in fields was crazy, just different stuff that i'd never had before, so i ran spybot,adaware,notrton, avg, asnd now i'm back to the original prob again..... i think i'm gonna go get my sledgehammer and fix this thing for good.........

hmmm, back to same old probs, guess it is hardware? I reformatted hd, put up i partition of 25000mb and installed xp on it, then used mobo cd and installed components from there, then keyboard cd, if anyone has any suggestions i'd be more than willing to listen........

Hardware. Might be something minor like your drive cables, or a bad hard drive. The sound thing makes me think that. Bad servo motor maybe. Unfortunately, you have to do a process of elimination to isolate the problem. Could also be memory (which should be easy to check) or your power supply. Since it comes and goes, something has to be the weak link. Good luck.
