emachines laptop for $999

i expect this to get trashed, but i'd like to hear from someone who actually owns one. with rebates you can get the emachines m5312 for $999 from best buy.

would it be worthwhile to buy one at this price, especially considering the similarly equipped toshiba m30-s309 runs at $1839?

I don't know much about that laptop...it doesn't look bad despite its emachine's heritage...

Here's a few reviews that might help you out though:

I'm pretty sure you can get a slicker looking Dell with centrino and a p4-m for the same price. That has a lot more battery life than that emachines.

well, the inspiron 8600 that has the Pentium M, 15.4" and 512MB of memory is $1424. thats almost half again as expensive as the emachines.

what i'm most interested in is how satisfied people who buy this laptop are. anyone?

I'm also considering an eMachines laptop. If you're still looking, check out cnet.com's laptop reviews. They have a section called "user's opinions" in most of their reviews. On the eMachines M5310, which is basically the same as the M5312 except for a smaller hard drive, 96% of the 57 people who actually own the M5310 gave it a positive rating. Most of the Dells listed there get positive ratings by real live users below 70%.

I just layed down the bucks for its big brother, the M6805, which has an Athlon64 3000+ processor and Radeon 9600 mobility video. Best Buy was sold out, but I wanted the rebates to knock the price down to $1299. Supposed to get it Tuesday.

I'll be posting some benchmarks and stuff probably next weekend.

Oh man! you've got that right. The e-machines M6805 is a serious machine, even to Desktop standards. I got my hands on one last week, couldn't pass up the $300 bucks in rebates, plus the Best Buy rewards card gives you another $60 in gift coupons in the mail. This laptop is grotesque, in a good way.. The combination of hardware in this thing is sickening, and the Graphics performance is phenomenal --- Even in power save mode running on battery, Full Direct x 9 games can run with full settings perfectly..

In term of performance --- I ran some quick Sisoft sandra tests --- Overall a very good performer, and the 1600mhz bus definitely helps -- awwww poor pentium, LOL.. The Athlon 64 beats out some of The desktop Pentium 4 3 gig processors in performance -- only the newest extreme edition pentium 4 3.2gig can beat this one --- really impressive for a mobile Athlon 64.. All in all, The M6804 stomps my desktop computers into the dust --- enough said. The only laptop made that can even run on par with this machine, is the newest Alienware $4000 laptop running the , that's right, Athlon 64 .. Good to be in the market for a laptop right now, sure glad I waited!!
