Don't know about drake, but redhat needs the nforce mobo driver to be installed before the sound will work. Like you said, it appears, but doesn't work. Simple DL, untar, make, make install, reboot (or run kudzu).

Drake tends to be better than RH for that sort of thing. There's lots of extra bits you need to install on RH (and now fedora by the looks of it)
First of all, check the mixer levels. Most distros initialise them to 0. You'll need to up the master and PCM ones. use kmix or something for that.
Secondly, you could recompile the kernel to support the sound card. This shouldn't be neccesary, but it uses the intel i810 driver (CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0) presumably you could use OSS also, but I think Mandrake uses ALSA.

If I remember right.... it showed using the intel i810 driver when I looked at the configuration...
I changed it to nvidia, with no results...
I d/l the rpm for the nforce drivers and put that in... no change..
Forgive me for being a linux newbie..... but when you say recompile.... how is that done exactly???

Hard to explain.
You need to know all the filesystems, drivers, options you're going to use. Once you've done it a few times it shouldn't be a problem, but expect to screw up a few times first.
Read these and see if you get it: http://www.justlinux.com/nhf/Compiling_Kernels
Before you do that, check the mixer levels. That's the most likely problem. PLEASE do that and tell us if it worked or not. You've been asked a few times, and haven't posted if you did it or not. Once you've tried that you can mess about with the other stuff, but if you haven't its a waste of time.

Oh, I looked at the mixer.... didn't see anything wrong...
but I'll double check when I can actually see it...(when I am at home).. |
