Outdoors Can't figure this one out

We have a simple peer to peer network with Win9x, 2000 & XP PC's with static IP adresses.

Here is the problem.

This one particular machine will not connect to the network. It worked before but the computer froze up and when I restarted it won't recognize the NIC. BTW it had Win98. Fair enough...I installed a new NIC and it redid all the configs and it just won't show up on the network.

After this didn't work i formatted the HD and loaded Win2000. In WIn2000 it shows the network icon on the task bar but does not send or receive any packets. It can't ping any other computer on the network either. The cable is working because i tried another PC on it and this PC on another cable. I even tested the new card on another PC and it's working fine. I even tried 3 other brands of NICs.

What could possibly be the problem?
P166MHZ <----- I know...
32MB EDO
40GB HD
3COM 10/100 NIC
PCI Videocard
230W AT PSU

Any sugestions?

Brian

are they all in ste same workgroup? Have you double checked your IP's and subnet? How are they networked (hub, router, switch)?

Yes they're all in the same workgroup. I double checked the IP's and subnet mask. They're all connected to about 6 switches on each floor of the building.

Have you tried using the NIC in different PCI slots on the motherboard? I had the same problem with a NIC on a Soyo Dragon MB.. moved the NIC to the last PCI slot on the motherboard and that seemed to make it happy.

Here's what I just did:

I setup that PC and another on a hub by themselves(XP and 2000). But still no communication. The network lights on the hub are on but not blinking.

If you are running XP firewall disable it and see if that helps or if using another firewall make sure it has you IP's in the safe range.
