XP Home & Win98se networking
Hey had 3 machines networked together and DSL sharing, all was well for 18 months
yesterday my mother who is on my network got a new Dell with XP Home, plugged in the cat5e and instant internet, I did nothing it configured itself ( scary with M$)
So internet connection sharing was uninterupted and still fine after 3 days, DSL modem>D-Link 4 port router>computers
file and print sharing? I know XP's default is MShome, and 98se is workgroup they both show up on my main machine 98se, when I open network nieghborhood, and click entire network. but i can not access any files on the XP machine.
How do I make 98se and XP home play nice?

the XP machine must have tried to answer because Zone alarm just gave me a popup warning
I put her "New" ip address in and got the XP machine, and now it's asking for a password.

This is about the username/password combination. When access WinXP shares you must be using a username and password that match an account on the the WinXP machine.
When using Win98 to access it, you are only offered the choice to specify the password (but not the username). So you either create the same username account on XP (that matches username used on Win98), or chagne Win98 logon name to match one in XP, or you enable the Guest account on the WinX:P machine which bascially means it doesn't care what the username is.

By default xp uses simple file sharing (guest account turned on, everyone can access anything that is shared).
This can be changed from tools->folder options (I recall so).
But, you will probably just want to create an identical account on wxp.

ok DVNT1, I'll do that and post back, but I'm off to work, so I'll post back this evening
go to the XP Home machine, set up my user name and password to the same as on my 98se machine
come back to my win98se machine and try to acess the XP home machine Network nieghborhood>entire network>MSHome>"computer name">password> then I should have full acess to the XP Home machine
the Xp machine is my moms and she's still learning and I'll nned to get into her machine now and then, she lives down stairs, and I drilled a hole in the floor/her cieling to run the cat5e

I think things just got a little more complicated
when on my 98se machine and i click MShome I don't get the password option any more
mshome is not accessible
the computer or share name could not be found. kame sure you typed it correctly and try again.
gona eat now then go back downstairs and resetup my user account on the xp machine
should I run the shre wizard on the xp machine?

is the firewall OFF on the xp machine? Make sure of that before you chase any phantoms.
Make sure also the Win98 machine doesnt have any spaces in the name...Win98 could do ok with spaces in the name , like "new comp"..but xp will gag on a space in a name.
I think maybe make sure, especially on the w98 box that "client for msoft networks" is the primary network logon. (right click "network neghborhood"/properties etc)
--------------------
ok, and, Im not too sure if you said this explicitly or not....but I think I would make sure I have all the workgroup names the same....either all "workgroup" or "mshome" or better yet, some homemade name...but either way have em be the same.
Also you can check stuff using the dos prompt also like running "net view" to see the other comps on the network which are sharing files...and then "net view" with the name of the comp to see the actual files being shared....like "net view \\mycomp"
---------------------
oh yeah....I wouldnt run any wizards, lol....I think its better to just do stuff by hand so at least you KNOW what is being set or changed....wizards have ways of doing stuff like turning on firewalls that you dont realize or on etc.

It's the default for pro corp too. I don't know what sp1 does, I don't have it installed.
But I remember having wonder what the h??? is going on when I first setup shares on my xp box
(that is, I was wondering why can't I setup acl on the share.)
The guest account isn't on by default, but it is turned on when simple file sharing is set up.
