Question about Gaim

Hi all,
I've become fed up with aim's new sound byte ads... they drive me crazy. I know I can pause the sound, but frankly I don't think I should have to. So I tried Gaim out (windows) and the new version is tight. But does anyone know if there's a way to change the output directory for the IM logs? I like to keep my logs along with all my media, etc. on a separate drive; but I can't seem to find anyplace to change the directory location.

Gaim, huh? Never heard of it.

I've heard complaints about these "sound bite ads" but I never get any with my AIM. Are you sure yu can't turn them off?

wow I'm surprised you haven't heard of it.. very popular with linux. But yeah you can't turn these stupid soundbytes off, only temporarily by hitting pause. And I think it's only in the newest version of aim. It sucks cuz I'll go 3 days without hearing one of them and then I'll get 3 in an hour.

I have the newest version, but maybe this is one of those XP things. I've never gotten anything like that. The onlyt thing I don't like about Aim is that the AIM Today window pops up regardless of how I set up my preferences.

I'll check out Gaim.

another good program that goes with AIM is AIM+, basically u download one of the compatible versions of AIM (the link to it is on the website) then install AIM+ to your computer and it gives you the options of transparency, taking away the stock scroller, the ads on top, etc. I used it for quite some time, but a recent reformat has left me to use standard AIM... personally i would like to give msn messanger, if only all my buddies would do the same!

mm I do have one of those programs, not aim+ but another one that does what you mention... but it doesn't kill the sound

AIM is so weird osprey, it would do this when I had 2K on my system a few weeks ago too. But I don't have that aim today popup problem, turning that off works for me. Figures; makes me wonder how reliable this stuff really is.

*bump

I found this on gaim's website; it tells you how to change where the settings are saved... kind of.

~ Where are my Gaim settings saved? - As of 0.69, shfolder.dll is used to determine the location for a user's app data. On Windows ME this will be something like "C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\username" and on Win 2k/XP "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data". This can be overridden by setting the HOME environmental variable.

So do I need to alter the .dll file? Does anyone know how to do this? Or am i reading this wrong??

Easier yet, get a copy of Kerio Personal Firewall and install it.

It will ask you about every network access attempt from each executable on your system (as well as ask you before allowing applications to launch other applications).

When you start AIM, allow it to connect to port 5190, but disallow it from connecting to port 80. That will stop the ads.
