Laptop NIC ( no incoming connection )

See, I've got this M700 compaq armada from a friend to look at, and for whatever reasons, the NIC doesn't show up. I've got it hooked up to my cable with a good known cat5e cable and connection port on the router. It has WinXP installed. The NIC is attatched next to the modem port, so I am assuming that they are part of the same unit, which is a 56kflex modem by Lucent. Windows doesn't detect the NIC port, and I can't seem to find anything about it on my own.

This is where you all come into the mix. Suggestions? It's a 500mhz processor and 256mb of ram running XP. It has a new battery, and everything else seems to be in good working order.

what do you mean "doesnt show up"? check in the device manager if it is installed and detected as a network adapter.

I'm not seeing it anywhere on the system at all....like it doesn't exist. Add new Hardware doesn't find it.
