Systems CD ripping under Win ME

I've reformatted my bro-in-law's Dell 4100, P III 866 with 384 MB RAM. Everything is working fine except I cannot find a program which will work satisfactorilly for CD ripping. I prefer Exact Audio Copy, but it is unbelievably slow on this system. CDEX will not display EITHER drive : Samsung DVD-ROM SD-612 or Sony CDRW CRX140E.

I have used Adaptec's ASPI installer to update the ASPI layer. ASPIcheck shows the layer to be working properly and both APIX.VXD and WNASPI32.DLL are of the same version (4.71.2). This made no change.

Where have I gone wrong?

At Home In case you are curious...

I had to srep back to the original ASPI layer AND go to a slightly older version of CDEX. Problem solved.

Windows ME still sux, tho...

I have an identical machine (except 933 processor) and use Musicmatch Jukebox for this. Other than the fact that the free version is a bit slow, ~5x or so, it works fine.

I still use ME and have never had problems with it. But then, I've got a bit more computer savvy than most people. For rookies, I recommend XP.

EAC is an excellent program, and quite fast, at leas to me. I use EAC to rip the CD into wav files and EasyLame to convert the wavs to MP3's. Why is it ripping so slowly? There must be a problem with your machine, because my dad's computer can handle ripping CD's fine.

Use MUSICMATCH if you like lifeless, low fidelity and often with errors MP3's.
