Systems Norton Ghost queston ...

I have Norton Ghost 2002 and I'm trying to resize my patition when I restore it. What switch do I use to do that, I've tried the "swz" switch but to use that do you have to create a image with that switch to rezise you partition. Cause I don't use it on the image, I was restoreing.

Also when I created a image of my XP setup I had to use one of the switches that make ghost take a picture of the whole partition which incluse the boot patiton and of course the system patition (or is it the other way a round (aw... who can remember that stuff anyway.) But the main point is I want to make a image of my XP setup, and I want to know if I'm doing it right or what (again with the swithes) "switches" to use.

Welcome to the forum!

I have never used "switches" on ghost before....or rather, I always just use whatever is the default.

Are you suing it from a command prompt somehow or are you using ghost boot floppies and the graphical interface?

Anyway, I am not quite clear what you mean by 'restore".......then you mention image.

Do you have an image now?

If you imaged the hard drive using "disk to image" then you just restore it using "restore from image" and it will fill out the hard drive all the way.

I havent used it a LOT for saving individual partitions....I cant really remember what the rules are for that etc.

I always use "disk to image" and I put the images on cdrw's (usually takes two or MAYBE 3 cd's for a big xp install with other progs installed)...and then when I go to restore it, it is just "restore from image".

If I do a build on a spare drive, say a 9g drive....and then I save the image to cdrw..then later I restore it to a 40g drive it automatically resizes it out to fit the drive..no special switch is needed, or at leats I think it is the default switch (maybe Ive had the switch set for so long I forgot I did set it, lol)

If you have 2 equal partitions from a 9g drive saved using "disk to disk"...and then you restore that to a, 30g drive....it will resize those partitions to probably 15g a piece...or if the partitions were different sizes it will resize them but keep them proportioned the same.

Maybe you can be a bit more specific about exaclt HOW you saved the image or whatever you have saved that you want to restore.....and why do you want to resize it? Are you going to a different sized drive or what? Or do you just want to resize it for other reasons? Do you have more than 1 partition?

Give us more in depth details.

JP

I use a Win 98 boot disk to have my cdr be IDed then I put in the ghost boot disk and type ghostpe from the dos command line. Ghost 2002 does not run in windows only dos. Yes I have an image right now. I imaged the partiton which in 2+ GB and I'm trying to put it on a 10 Gb phyisical drive in a 5GB partiton of the disk.

And the instance where I resized the partition, when it passed the Source Partition|License field|Destination Drive dialog box|Destination Partition dialog box,it was here were I was able to resize the partition.

Kids Is this it

think I found how to resize the partation Could you explain these instruction I found off the pdf file on the Norton Ghost CD.

1 On the main menu, click Local > Partition > From Image.
2 In the File Locator dialog box, do one of the following:
Type the path and file name of the image file.
Click Browse to locate the image file.
Specify the drive or device and select the full path name. The image
file may reside on a local drive. When using peer-to-peer connections,
the image file is located on the slave computer.
3 Press Enter.
4 In the Source Partition dialog box, select the source partition for the
image file.
The Source Partition dialog box contains the details of all of the
partitions in the image file.
5 In the License field, type your license number.
6 In the Destination Drive dialog box, select the destination drive.
The Destination Drive dialog box contains the details of every disk that
Norton Ghost finds on the local computer.
Cloning partitions
37
7 In the Destination Partition dialog box, select the destination partition.
Select an existing partition carefully as this is the partition that will be
overwritten.
The Destination Partition dialog box contains the details of all of the
partitions on the selected destination drive. If this is a local
partition-to-partition copy, then the source partition is unavailable for
selection. However, you can create a new partition if space is
available. If you create a new partition, it can be resized during the
cloning operation. "HOW DO YOU GET HERE TO DO THIS HOW DOES THE IMAGE HAVE TO BE WHAT SWICTCH ARE USED IF ANY"
8 In the Proceed with Partition Load? dialog box, ensure that the correct
options have been selected.
9 Do one of the following:
Click Yes to proceed with the partition cloning.
Norton Ghost overwrites the destination partition using the
partition details contained in the image file. If you need to abort the
process, press Ctrl-C, but be aware that this leaves the destination
partition in an unknown state.
Warning: Only click Yes if you are sure that you want to proceed. The
destination partition is completely overwritten with no chance of
recovering any data.
Click No to return to the menu.
10 If spanning is enabled do one of the following:
Click OK to continue on the same form of media.
Click Filename to restore from a different location, then type the
location and file name of the image file span.
11 Restart the destination computer when the partition copy is complete.
Run Symantec Disk Doctor, ScanDisk, or a similar utility to verify the
integrity of the destination partition.

I use a Win 98 boot disk to have my cdr be IDed then I put in the ghost boot disk and type ghostpe from the dos command line.

First off, go ahead and make you one disk that does both....either put cd drivers on the ghost disk (surely this can be done from ghost in windows...if ghost is actually installed onthe comp)....or, just put ghostpe.exe on a win98 boot disk....if there is not enough room on a factory w98 disk, maybe download a stripped down disk with cd drivers from www.bootdisk.com

Ok, I am of the opinion that it will automatically fill in the extra 3g of your 5g partition....all you have to do is start the ghost process and when you choose the destination partition etc it will show the"new" size as being 5g. (I think, lol)

Not sure about the instructions they have there as far as new partitions etc....Ive never tried that etc.
