Shortening audio files for CDR burning?

Fellow Members:

I utilize Roxio CD Creator Platinum (Version 5) on a Windows 2000 Professional System.

I have been running into a problem, to wit: oftentimes I download audio lectures which I burn onto CD-R's. Unfortunately the downloads are sometimes > 80 minutes, e.g. 83, 87 etc.

Just last evening ran into a situation where I downloaded two parts of a lecture/seminar, "part one" was 90 minutes and "part two" was approximately 45 minutes.

I really do not want to "chop off" part of a lecture and lose it.

What is the best way to "split" these two downloads onto two CD-R's? Will my present Roxio program do this? If so, how?

I also have "Total Recorder" for recording streaming audio ...

Thanks!

Brangwen

PS: I have a Pioneer DVR burner: will DVRs play audio on a Home CD player?
This I have not tried ...

Are these wav files you're downloading or mp3's? Assuming they're wavs... if you want to make the files fit on a CD-R without losing quality you could try Monkey's Audio or flac. Unfortunately, the resulting disk would only play back on a computer but would suffer no loss in quality as Monkey's and flac are lossless encoders.

You could also use an audio editor to split the files and make 2 CD's. I don't know if CD Creator Platinum comes with an audio editor that would allow you to do this as I use Nero which does have a basic audio editor.

There are several freeware audio editors around... a google search should give you a few options in that regard.

JohnE.:

I appreciate your suggestions! I may have an editor in Roxio Easy CD Creator Platinum (v. 5), where I think I have the ability to play through an audio file and "fadeout" after the file has played to the point where I need to discontinue it.

The trick will be to take the remainder of the aforementioned file and seamlessly combine it with (for example) a 30 minute downloaded audio file for the second CDR in a two CDR file "set."

By the way, I am working with MP3's.

Thanks again.

My wife has Nero v.5.xx that came bundled with her burner, but who knows

Nifty programs for future reference. Unfortunately I require the finished product to be "FINALIZED" as I must have the ability to play back on home stereo equipment.

Thanks!

On this same topic, what is a good way to lower the size of the file?
I have a 850MB audio file (audiobook) that is too big for a cd
What is a good way to shrink it? It doesn't matter if its lossy compression as its just spoken word anyways.

Have you checked out Flac, supra?

It look's interesting, but I haven't had a chance to "play" with it.

BTW: Long time no see!
