You still need zone alarm, even with a router.

well technically you dont need it. it all depends on your paronoid level and how much control you want over your network

i have just the router in place with no software like zone alarm.

the thing that zone alarm does is catches the software trying to access the internet. From there you can limit which has access and which dont.

So technically you dont need it.
