Kids does your isp condone cable routers?

i was just curious. i have broadband internet, and im getting voice over ip for a great deal and dumping verizon. unfortunately they have to come into my apt. which id rather have them not do but they dont offer a do it yourself installation at this point in time.

i never called to ask but is it legal to use a cable router? i mean, my isp used to charge an extra 10 bucks if you wanted another machine on the network so about 3 years ago i picked up a router and have used it ever since.

if they sell them in the store and everywhere else though, i wonder ..............

they are coming tomorrow morning and i didnt want to have to disconnect it and put it in the other room but i might just do that. any thoughts?

it is more if you want another cable modem but you are paying for the bandwith so it is your choice if you want to share it over multiple comps

You'd have to read your contract. But, most ISP's don't because it's so common nowadays.

They usually charge for an extra IP address or if you want them to install the router and config your network. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Oh yeah, are you the originator of the SuSe CD's? I got 'em and am sending 'em on, but wanted to put the originators name on the list for the other person to send 'em back to when they're done.

Mine says in it's FAQ that routers are unsupported...but heck, the guys who put in the cable line for the modem said to get a router. So I guess it's a 'look the other way' kind of thing.

I once called Optimum Online for tech support (yeah, yeah) and I accidentally gave them the IP of my 2nd NIC. At the time, I was using Internet Connection Sharing. They instantly red-flagged my account and if I ever called back they would say that no support is available for people who share their connections with more than one computer. That was about four years ago (when they charged $19.99/mo). When The Wiz (Cablevision's partner) started selling routers about six months later, they got a little more lenient about it. Nowadays, they more or less expect you to use a router and share the connection.

All in all, it really depends on the ISP and their rules and regs. However, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

My ADSL provider allows routers but absolutely will not provide any kind of support for any issue that might be connected to the router.

I can't say I know of anybody that has a cable internet and does not use a router.
the isp's really don't care if you do
they just will not help you solve a problem if you have a problem with it.
but then thats why we are here
