Gateway Laptop Display Problem

Got a friend who's got a Gateway laptop and is having trouble with the display screen. Seems that whenever that comp is started up, the screen gradually starts to turn gray around the edges and works it's way until it covers the whole screen. The comps OS is 2000. Any thoughts?

Screen may be dying.

Have you re-installed the video drivers?

Are you saying it's possible the video card is going bad? After it goes bad it won't go into ANYTHING. Gateway company said it may be a software problem... how could it be a software problem?

well the software controls the hardware, so it could very well be that. reinstall the drivers, like bill said, and then check to see if you've got a warranty on the puter...might have to replace the screen.
if you move the screen (more open or more closed) during when the screen is getting darker, does it flicker or get better/worse? it could be something with the wiring in the hinge mechanism.
imo, get a pro to look at it...it should still be covered by warranty.

welcome to TechIMO!

Before any drastic screen replacement occurs...

My Inspiron screen quit a few months ago, days after my warranty expired. Not interested in basically buying a new laptop, I cracked the laptop open (huge pain in the butt) and saw that the monitor connection cable was really loose. Secured it, and everything worked fine.

he doesnt mean the Video card is actually bad he just means you may have to update it some. i.e. drivers and such. Does the laptop have a VGA out port so you can plug it into a monitorif so i would try that and see what happens.

It's hard for me to tell now what it has because she took it to the Gateway people. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for the info anyway, it's always a BIG help.
