Line Across Monitor

Hello,

I recently got a gateway 400 vtx notebook for xmas. I was messing around with the graphics or something, and now I have a line going across the top of my screen. It stays there no matter what programs I have open, its always on top. I dont know what I did or what I can do to fix it. PLEASE SEND HELP T_T

Send a message via AIM to originel
is it a line that is completely black (or some single color)? or is it part of your desktop that a window will never cover? and how thick is it? what happens when you move a window up over it?

line on screen

The line is about a millimeter thick it looks kind of black. It is part of my desktop that no window no window will cover. I tryed to take a screen shot of my desktop but I dont think Im doing it right. If you tell me how to do screen shots and where they save to I could show you what I am talking about.

Could be the memory on your video card. Try a different card if possible.

To do a screen shot, touch control and print screen on your keyboard and open an image application..like Windows Paint if none other is available..click edit and click paste..that will put the image from the clipboard into Paint where you can "save as" (and give it a name). That will give you just the active screen that is open. You can just touch print screen and capture the whole screen and do the same thing. If you have Paint Shop Pro, you can use that..the same way..if you do not have anything other than Windows Paint, go download IrfanView http://www.irfanview.com/ it is a freebie and does a great job..and you can save an image in other than BMP which is all Windows Paint will allow I think (in Win98 anyway).

ok

Ok this is really wierd. I took the screen shot of my desktop but the line didnt show up. I dunno why. So I used photoshop to drew the line as I see it on my screen. No matter how many windows I have open the line is always visible on top. I uploaded the pic onto to the forum so lets hope it works.

I have a bad Nvidia TNT pro somewhere around here with some bad onboard ram. That card does similar things, but more lines..and the lines are included with text. A screen shot will not show any of those lines either...blew my feeble when I took a screen shot to send a friend..and the screen shot looked great!!

yeah it appears to be a hardware issue...this is a common problem for lcd displays...if it is under warranty i would send it back immedetley...if its not thats pretty tough luck since it is a laptop would ve hard to fix

you could also try hooking up a monitor to see if it is the screen or video card (or onboard since its a laptop)

send it back, get it repaired, end of problem
if its old and a TFT moniter then you may have some dead pixels, or maybe its just duff
OR
if you have a recovery disk, pop that in and set everything back to normal
