Weird hang with startup in XP
I gotta weird kinda problem I can't seem to fix here tonight. My dau's PC just won't startup winXP anymore. Just suddenly refused to load. Boots fine, loads winXP to the point of loading the desktop and then goes no further. Doesn't lock up, just keeps reading the drive forever. Left it for more than 40 mins and it didn't get anywhere. Will run the screensaver happily when it should (ie at 10 mins), but still no more than the desktop loaded.
Funny thing is, if I do a selective startup, and turn off all non-essential services, it boots fine. Might be network services that causes it, but I haven't verified that yet. Certainly not Norton AV scanner, as I'm running a full scan now.
Anyone have any idea while the virus scan is running?
Thanks
Mick

Your half-way there! Turn on those items turned off in selective start-up one at a time until it hangs- about the only way you'll know for sure.

Well, I gave up. Tried turning on and off specific items (even kept a list ), but nothing seemed to make it do it, unless I enabled 'em all again. So I just reformatted and reinstalled, after saving her settings. Works fine now.
I wonder if it was a M$ update that did it though, as that seems to be the last site that PC visited before it started playing up. Wouldn't surprisi me.
Cheers
Mick

This PC updates automatically, as my dau wouldn't do it otherwise. I know it's not the safest thing to allow, but I always figured it beats no updates at all. Now I ain't so sure....
No, it wasn't one of the bogus M$ emails. She doesn't even use a mail prog apart from her Hotmail account.
Cheers

Funny thing is, I tried that before the clean install, and it didn't help. Still hung on starting. I don't think it was a system file thing, but something else. Weird. The clean install worked, even when I used the file and settings transfer wizard. I was worried that whatever it was would be transferred as well, but it didn't seem to. Like I said, weird.
Cheers

Mickwish,
Was the hard drive making any strange noises? Trying to load a needed dll, etc., from a HD bad sector could make the whole thing hang.
