Fat32 or NTFS

Which should I use when loading XP home? It has asked if I want to convert, but havent since I`m not sure what advantages there are to it.I partitioned my HD into 2 sep drives (C,D) ,should I convert both?

ntfs is the prefered system to use with any nt based o/s's.
you will have much better security protection.

make the C: drive NTFS while the D: drive Fat32. make the D drive your data drive so that you can access it when you are using DOS. Good luck.

Personally I prefer the FAT32 option - furture fault finding is a lot easier as with NTFS you have no accessible DOS at boot!!

So you are doing an upgrade? 'Converting" is an upgrade thing usually...changing from fat32 to ntfs. (of course, be careful cuz there is no way to convert back to fat32, lol)

NTFS is the much preferred way nowadays. For one thing, some features plain WONT WORK on fat32....like compression and permissions that give XP security. For instance you see that on Win98/ME..uhh, there WAS NO security...but on XP you can have real passwords and if the person doesnt know the password..he is stuck. (unless maybe if he is a hacker of some sort)

I may not be technically exact on this point, but I also beleive that fat32 has only 1 copy of the master boot record whereas NTFS keeps 2 copies....so it is a little safer that way also.

JP

Besides....Chicks dig NTFS!!

agreed, ntfs is far superior as long as you are using NT. and don't worry about DOS compatibility, if you need a command prompt you can use your windows cd and there is a command line option in the recovery (recovery console) that can read ntfs.

I`m using XP home, and its a clean install. So is it correct to have the C drive NTFS and the D: drive fat32? (same physical drive, partitioned to 2 drives)

Actually I'm a NTFS for the C: drive and....hell, NTFS for everything. While DOS is handy because it's so powerful in the right hands, the added features NTFS offers with XP/2000 override most reasons to use a FAT-based system.

And as JP pointed out, chicks dig NTFS!
