Half-Life2, system requirements, and you.
Well I know no one knows for sure the system requirements of HL2, but I figured I'd fire up a thread anyways. OK, me first:
AthlonXP 3200+ /400Mhz FSB
512MB DDR400
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
BFG 128MB Ti 4600 (overclocked Ti 4200)
WinXP Pro SP2
SoundBlaster Audigy 1
Monsoon 5.1 speaks
80GB Maxtor 7200rpm ATA/133
From what I've heard, the last beta tested of HL2 ran on a 5900 Ultra and a 9600 Pro/XT at around 30FPS (that's right, the 9600 runs faster than a 5900 Ultra lol) but I'm not sure about with the latest Forceware drivers and the new revised compiler it includes. I'm guessing from what I've seen in 3DMark03 that it helps somewhat, but not enough to catch up to the ATI silicon. This is just a guess though, as my system is down until Asus ships me a new motherboard as mine went down.
I know my video card is behind the times, but is there any tidbit of info anyone here has about system requirements, like do I need more than 512MB RAM (I'm getting a 1GB twin-pack of Corsair Value sometime) or is it processor speed that matters? Anything like that would help. If you have any experience with games based on the QuakeIII engine such as Jedi Knight II that basically rely on processor power and not graphics ability you know what I mean.
Also, would it be best to get a 9700 Pro or a 9800 Non-Pro, all RAM counts being the same? the 9700 Pro performs just an itty-bit better (like a few FPS more) than the 9800 NP, but is this a game that maybe getting the 9800 would be faster than the 9700? I won't blame you for not knowing, does anyone?
I keep calling Asus's RMA department for a status on my board as I really am getting sick of this laptop, so I won't be able to experiment with benchmarks (specifically 3DMark03, but others as well) until I get my new mobo.
And yes, I know my card is DirectX 8 only, so I won't be able to play with the DX9 stuff until I upgrade, but will my card be able to handle even that? What I find interesting is that games that looks worse and have not-as-good physics engines run slower than the (roughly) 30fps that the unoptimized beta of HL2 plays at. HaloPC/Homeworld2 anyone?
As you can see, I've just watched the 25 minute/600 MB gameplay demo of HL2 and am now waiting to upgrade my system until this and DoomIII ships. It's really got me jumpy, and my grades will continue to suck until this game ships.

Still got my
AMD 2100XP@2600
GF4 Ti4200@300/600
GTXP 5.1
512MB PC2700
Gonna be getting either a 9800 or 9800 pro before HL2 comes out though, surely either of this card will come down in price before then.

From what I've heard, the last beta tested of HL2 ran on a 5900 Ultra and a 9600 Pro/XT at around 30FPS | I think thats because the FPS is locked, and a better PC just means nicer graphics, not better speed. Lower end pcs just have lesser graphics.
