Laptop does not boot

Hey all... I've searched through the forums but have not found a post exactly like my problem.

I have a hp zt1000 laptop that refuses to boot. With the a/c power supply plugged in, all the external lights come on, such as the front panel back-lights, the a/c power light, even the battery light with and without the battery in (amber- not green). Other than the lights, there is no action in this laptop at all. I do not hear the fan or the hard drive running. Nothing is displayed on the screen. No beeps.

I have tried to reseat the memory within the laptop and I have also tried pushing the reset button. I have tried taking the dvd drive and the hard drive out and starting, but still nothing. HP claims that it could be static that is holding it up. I went through their procedure to remove it, and of course nothing.

So, could this be bad RAM, bad mobo... bad everything...?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Matt

Is it even getting through the initial POST? If not then can you send it to HP for them to look at? Is it under warranty?

It could possibly be the CPU or a short somwhere as well.

Or it could be something else I haven't though of.

After searching the hp web-site for a looong while, I came up with this advice... too bad the laptop doesn't come with a floppy drive or it might actually work. :-( Is this sound advice, or am I bein scammed?

Symptoms:
When connecting the notebook to the AC adapter, all one touch button lights (LED) will be illuminated. If you try to press the power button, the notebook won't boot. If you remove the AC adapter and boot up the notebook with battery, the notebook won't boot. Unable to reset notebook. This is the EC -Embedded controller being corrupt(not a faulty AC adapter).

Resolution:
1 Remove the battery from the notebook
2 Press and hold the following keys: "Fn", "B" and "Q"
3 Apply (Connect) the AC adapter to the notebook while pressing and holding the keys in step 2
4 Wait for 30 seconds or longer. You may observe all panel LEDs be "OFF"
5 Release keys "Fn", "B" and "Q"
6 Press the power button to boot up the notebook. If all panel LEDs are still "ON" you may need to press and hold the power button several times. This will help to reset the "EC"
7 Insert the battery to the notebook
8 Flash the notebook with the latest BIOS version

The laptop isn't under warranty and it doesn't get to an initial POST.
