Athlon CPU Fan help

Hey
I am looking into buying a new cpu fan. The processor i have is a atholon XP socket A 2100. I am looking in to a little bit of overclocking and try to keep my temps. way down. I am just wondering what fan you would suggest me or what ones you had good luck with. I am thinking of mybe a thermaltake but mabe there are some other ones out there that might be better. I am looking for a some what quiet fan not a real loud one. I would also maybe consider water cooling. I was looking at some reviews and thought this might be good for me.

I am up to any of your suggestions or comments.

Thanks for the help in advanced
Rick

This is what I have on my 2500+ Barton. Keeps it under 36C pretty much all the time at 100% loads and slight overclocking. 6 case fans help too.

Water cooling is usually reserved for people who want to overclock to the absolute maximum possible. I would call this overkill if you want to do "a bit of overclocking". You might look at a fan h/s combo made for a higher rated cpu such as a 2500+ or 2800+ or something similar. This would give you the extra heat dissipation capability you would need to overclock a 2100+. I usually buy fans from www.nexfan.com

If you're looking at water cooling as being any sort of option for you, then I'd have to steer you away from the hundred dollar kits from any of the manufacturers. These smaller kits usually don't cool any better than a decent air-coolers at half the price. If you truly want good temps from a water cooled solution, then you're going to be looking at spending upwards of 200-300 dollars.

I'm going to have to go with elroy in his thinking that water would be overkill for you. Check out Thermalright's SLK-900A, and add to that a high-flow, low-noise fan, and you should be all set to do moderate overclocking.

For comparisons of air coolers, check here:

For water kit comparisons, check here:

These tests should give you a pretty adequate repesentation as to what you should expect from the different products available today.

this is what i use also,,,looked at a volcano heatsink and fan and even though it is a manuel variable speed fan it is very loud!!!
I would go with the "Areoflow" vantec fan....it works well and keeps my cpu at 38 C and at about 44 C full load. I also have it overclocked from a 2500 to a 3200 athlon xp.

here is link to my web page..wait for it to load...has alot of pics...sry..but you can see the aeroflow on my cpu and the case fans....the side panel which is not in view has a 80mm fan also...

http://redskins.homestead.com/KRTTech.html

front fan is at bottom 80 mm intake
right side fan which is an intake also 80mm cools the HD
left side fan 80mm intake also cools the pci slots
PCI slot fan 3200 rpm exhaust at back (bottom)
top 92mm rear exhaust fan

case fans help alot...

I'd also go ahead and recommend the Vantec Aeroflow as a very good performing heatsink that also happens to be relatively easy on the ears. I've installed one before, and it offered good temps on a 1700+ Pally, and lessened the noise the computer made considerably (compared to a Swiftech MCX-370).

Beware of the very noisy fans. I had a Delta that was rated at 38 dba, if I remember correctly. I lasted about 2 weeks and I swapped it out for something quieter.
