laptop hardrive ?

I have absolutely no knowledge on laptops, so lemme ask you all a question.

I have a friend that needs a hdd for his Compaq presario 1900. His bonked and won't even get through fdisk. How much should he expect to pay?
I searched a little bit on google and found some universal ones and they were like $130 for a 10 gigger
Is that a normal price? He was thinking maybe a 40 gig, but it was $200!

If you have any places to get one cheaper, or any other advice, please let me know.

Thanks,
jme

$200 for 40gb sounds high. Try Pricewatch.com or other price comparison websites. I just bought a 50gb drive for $200 from drivesolutions.com.

Check out Compaq's site as well. Although it will probably be more expensive then places like Pricewatch.

Just b/c they're special?
Well that might be some of it but theres definately more too it... they're 2/3 the width of a desktop hard drive, which if u were to calculate out would give desktops 2.25 times the platter area assuming theres the same number of platters (i beileve there are more in a desktop drive). Thus cramming all that data in at higher density, and durability to be carried around all the time makes them alot more expensive.

Not sure if this will fit your computer but at least for price comparison:

I bought a 20GB off of Ebay, then realized the laptop was still under warrenty.

Now I'm trying to sell the thing and get my money back.

Ebay is great place for used laptop HD's.
