monitor starts beeping and locks up pc

anyone have an idea why my monitor would lock up the pc and start beeping a continous beep???? Playing NFSU for about 45 min. and it does it...X3 today..Has never done it before?

is it monitor or video card??
Radeon 9600 pro 128 (fast write off) X8 (not overclocked)
athlon xp 2500 @ 11X200=3200
512 mg ram ddr 2700 DC
system temp 28
cpu temp 44 max when playing....

new case + 5 case fans, new cpu heatsink and fan upgrade
stock fan on video card..
How would I tell if my video card is getting to hot, there is nothing taking temps of it???

ps....Sony Multiscan E400 Trinitron 19" crt @ 85 mhz

Try dropping your refresh rate back to 75Hz and see if the problem occurs. It might be that it can't handle the 85Hz refresh while gaming.

The other option is to remove the side cover of the case and set a small fan so that it's blowing into the case. If it doesn't lock up then I would look into a better cooling setup for the card, maybe this one from Zalman.

well, what i did was took a heatsink and fan used on a radeon 9800 (Sweeper)'s card, he has an upgrade cooling unit on his card, and modified it to fit onto my 9600 which just had a round fan, and so far it has been working ok, no lock ups.

(HeadBand)...yes it was the monitor...i never heard a monitor beep either...was rather weird...

(Kuasimodem)...well, the reason it is on 85mhz is that is what the manufacturer suggests running it at, so i hope it would be able to handle it....but if it does it again, i will try the fan, my wife is already complaing about how many fans i have in the case as is..imaging opening it up and putting a small fan there next...he he he he.... ...also the monitor is not covered or anything, has open air to breath...kinda weird......

Had that monitor for years and it never beeped. Are you positive it was the monitor? I've never had a monitor beep. How did u modify the card? Curious...

I'm using Tt's Giant II on my Radeon 9800 NP. Seems to work pretty well.

??don't know why it beeped either but it did...had that dell 1994 monitor forever to and it never beeped...

anyway, had to take out the 9800 board pins and put in the 9600 board pins, then lengthen the power wires to fit into the 9600 socket and the heatsink barely fits......will probably notch out a small corner of the heat sink so it fits snugger onto board this week. but so far works great...no more problems...
