Outdoors GA-7N400 Pro 2 - "BEEE BOOO BEEE BOOO"

Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2
AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (2.08GHz) Thoroughbred
Mushkin 512MB PC2700 CL2 Blue
ATI 9600 Pro
Volcano 7 Heatsink/Fan
Arrow 500W Dual Fan power supply
Western Digital 40GB HDD in IDE1

This is what is set up on a table (with a PC speaker).

The computer gets to the short beep, like it normally should, but...

When I turn it on, the computer beeps like this: Short beep, BEEE BOOO BEEE BOOO. Then it turns itself off. The monitor never leaves standby (stays amber instead of going to green).

Just to make sure it posts properly, I tried removing the video card and turning it on, the computer beeps like this: Long beep, short beep, short beep, BEEE BOOO BEEE BOOO. Then it turns itself off.

The motherboard, CPU and memory have been tested together and also with another motherboard at the store.

David3800,
Hi I have the Pro,
Lets cover some of the basics that folks encounter:

The cpu socket is rotated 90 degrees, alot of users dont recognize this and put their hsf on backwards so check yours and make sure that the socket and cpu ledges line up.

And of coures the cpu fan must be plugged in.

That mb requires both the atx and the 12v 4 pin power to be connected.

How many sticks of ram?, if more than 1 try with just one stick, pull and reseat.

Holla back.

laterz,
dafanman

Oh yeah, you ought to have this link Gigabyt New Owners FAQ

dafanman, I think you're right on track! The High/Low/High/Low beeps usually indicate a problem with the CPU.. most likely caused by improper installation of the Heatsink, failure to plug in the heatsink, or failure of the heatsink fan.

It beeps because it detects very high temperatures (which would be caused by any of the above.) dafanman beat me to the probable answer

Yep..

Beep codes

I knew I kept that around for a reason. Reseat memory and cards for good measure.

Wow, thanks for the links. I'm going over some of that stuff now and it's really helpful.

I will take a picture with my phone later and post how I have the heatsink and fan installed.

There seems to be only two ways to put it on there and they're both the same. The three prongs on both sides of the socket and the Volcano heatsink grabs them... What happens besides possible overheat if the HSF is on backwards?

I've checked to make sure that the sensor is on the correct pin (3) also.

I've also tried a different memory stick, Elixer 512MB PC2700, but same results.

The power supply I have has both the ATX and 12v, and they are plugged in. I've even tried the 12v adapter that came with the motherboard. Same results.

Unfortunately I dont have another CPU to try with.
(oh you said PSU) I dont have another PSU to try with either.

They (Fry's) tested the CPU and Memory on the Motherboard before I brought it home, and set the BIOS.

The original setup was:
Soyo Dragon Platinum KT400
Muskin 512MB PC2700
AMD 2600+
Volcano 7+

The Soyo went bad so they gave me an "open box" Gigabyte and that was bad and missing correct I/O shield (I have an extra one now for the Gigabyte board if someone wants it). Then they gave me a NEW Gigabyte that was good and tested the CPU and Memory on it. The memory failed heavy testing so they gave me new memory.

They didn't test it though with my HSF, they used their own.

So the HSF is a year old (on the 25th of Jan) and the PSU has only been used for about 3 months.

The CPU is also going to be a year old on the 25th.

The case is an Antec, similar to their SOHO File Server Case, but without the front USB connectors. This was a hand-me-down and the QC date is 2001 I think.

The ATI 9600 Pro is about 3 months old also.

Nothing was ever overclocked and there has always been pretty good cooling: 2 front case fans (one for 2 RAIDed HDDs), 2 rear case fans, and a 5.25" drivebay fan on a 3rd HDD inbetween CD-RW and DVD.

If many of you agree that the problem is an overheating/HSF issue, I will check into that more. I hope I dont have to get a new CPU because I'm not ready for that quite yet.

You should be aware that Elixir/Nanya ram is not compatible with that board, and I have many links to bear that out if you need them.

"The memory failed heavy testing" What brand was that and what do you have for the board now?

You should also define the specs of that psu, its not one ive heard of , so from the label what are the 12v,5v and3v wattage outputs?

Laterz,
dafanman

WACK! Alright, well, that one is not being used anyway.

The memory that failed was a Muskin 512MB PC2700 from last year.

The memory being used now is a Mushkin 512MB PC2700 CL2 Blue.
