Kids File sharing problems

I have a similar problem to 2 of my friends, and would like some assistance on it.

We have all just brought routers (varying sorts) so I won't go into their model numbers.

My cable modem is plugged into the router, as are both my pcs and 2 x boxes.

The x boxes can speak to each other, and both pcs can access the internet. No problem so far, but now both PCs act differently when I look at file sharing.

One PC can only see the files and folders I have setup on itself, and cannot see the folders on the other pc.

The other PC can see the whole network, but when I try and access them it tells me they either don't exist or that I have no authority to enter them,.

I have Windows XP Pro, and have used the "setup home network" wizard on both PCs. I have also clickex on all my Hard Drives in both PCs and set them us so that anyone on the netopwkr can have root access to them.

I am using windows explorer to try and look at the files.

Can anyone give me any ideas as to what to try next.

i'm a bit stuck, and completely new to networking.

Have you enabled sharing on the drives/folders you want to share on the network?

Ya, all firewalls are off and I have setup the drives to the best of my knowledge to share files.

They certainly have like hands underneath them after I highlighted them and said yto the system that i wanted them shared on the network from root.

a little primer on sharing http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...ilesharing.htm

One thing of note is that is says the wizard automatically enables the firewall.

(kind of bad graphics on the page, you have to highlight em to read em, lol)

one thing i like check is to go to a dos prompt and run "net view"

ran like that without any other parameters it will show the comps on the workgroup (or possibly just the comps sharing files)

so you should see the names of both comps.

Then you can insert the name of each comp to see its shared files...like "net view \\thiscomp" (where "thiscomp" is the name of the comp.

also on xp pro you need to have "simple file sharing" enabled....but I cant remember where exactly it is, lol. It is enabled by default so it probably is already enabled but it is good to check.

(hi, Detritus)

OK, when I got home I checked out this stuff, and although I'd turned off both firwalls in XP, I forgot to do my Tiny Personal Firewall (DOH!!! - Basic stuff here)

My spare PC never had a seperate firewall, so I installed Tiny, and when I did it instantly recognised the network and set itself up to allow data transfer.

I have tried to set up a mask on the existing tiny to allow data to my main pc, but seem to have the mast wrong.

How can I find the internal IPs of my machines.
