Unknown Virus, can't use IE

Oh boy, desperation is never a pretty thing.

Here is my tale of woe. At 12:30pm today my internet connection went down. I put a call into my ISP and they said I have a virus, but their computer guru just left & didn't know exactly which virus it is; only that it is hitting computers right now.

The funny thing is, I can receive e-mail in Microsoft Outlook, I can play my on-line game (SW Galaxies) the only thing I can not do is open any web pages.

I have read through this forum a little, and tried running that McAfee AVERT Stinger but it did not find anything on my computer. I have run my anti-virus software but it hasn't found anything. Only problem is, I haven't updated it since mid-December. It is impossible to do any on-line scans and I can only work with what I can download to this computer & transfer to the other.

Thanks goodness we have two computers & this one still connects.

Any idea which virus I may be infected with. It's hard to get clean if you don't know what you're looking for.

Many thanks

ps. I am running Windows XP Pro

If the computer that is still up and running has a CD or DVD burner, you can get AVG free/trial edition and the manual update, burn it, and install/update it on the sick computer.
Sounds like something may have hosed IE. If you're running IE6, you can try the repair feature to see if this fixes it, but if you've got a bug you'll want to get rid of that first.

Here is a dandy little stand alone for all occasions. Stinger

You can place it on a floppy and run it from the floppy if you wish. You can place it on your hard drive as well and run it from there.

Cheers!
