cant get online

ever since I got an additional network card I have had nothing but problems. I have had this problem before and the only way I can fix it so far is to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows. I have tryed removing the card and running setup network in windows xp with all types of settings. internet only, share the internet through this computer and through a router. this time I got maximum pc the special on how to spped up your computer and they mentioned a program called bootvis.exe. I ran it and after a restart I couldn't get online. Now I am going to remove that card now and keep it out.
about the connection the second nic card was to hook up to my ps2 to play online. all that there is is the dsl modem hooked straight to my pc and from my pc to my ps2. But I only have a few months left before I am done school and dont realy need a second nic card anymore.

intel 2.53 ghz @ 2.66
asus p4s8x with onboard lan
512 ram
ati 9800 pro
the second nic card is a realtek

80% of all dsl cable modem problems are solved by unpluging the modem from the ac outlet ( the switch only turns off the little blinking lights) and rebooting while the modem is unplugged. and waiting 5 minutes.
This forces a new dhcp request and gets you back on line. Check your ip if it is 169.***.***.*** you might have to r&r tcpip
