Systems Please Help :-(?

Ok, we have a router and modem and everything connected upstairs, and three computers in the house using wireless usb adapters to get a signal from it. 2/3 of the computers are fine, the other one is constantly loosing signal strength and booting offline. It just cant keep a steady signal, and its practically below the router. . We just gave up on wireless and wanna go wired. Is it a contractor I need to call, too have a cat wire ran from the downstairs computer up to the router in the upstairs room (through the wall)? thats what contractors do right? ... another option.. Could I buy another cheap $20 modem on ebay, and just use that with the open cable line downstairs for the computer thats messing up? Would that work? Even tho, I already have a modem and router upstairs?

Any electrician or any contractor that has experience installing receptacles can do it.
You can do it yourself if you have a drill, a saw and a little experience.
If you lived near me I can do it (it usually takes about an hour) or even talk you through it on the phone!
I own a remodeling business

I don't think you could use another modem. If it'd work, I think you'd have to turn one of them off and only one could be on at a time.

You don't need a "contractor" to run the COAX cable. You could call your cable company and tell them you want another jack put it where your computer is. They'll probably charge you, but it'll probably be the easiest in the end since that's what they do for a living. If you know anybody that works or used to work for the cable company, see if they'll do it after hours and at a lower rate.

I called cable. They only install extra cable lines. How would I get that to work on the computer, you cant plug a cable line into the back of your computer. you need a modem. So what ure saying is contradicting with what ure saying. they want 20 bucks to put in another cable line where the screwed up pc is. But, even with that there, I still need a cable modem to plug the cable line into, then another wire that goes from the modem to the nic on the pc

What I was referring too was running a cat5 line between the downstairs computer and the existing router upstairs.
In this area at least it is difficult (almost impossible) to find a tech that will / can do it inside the wall. Even though it isn't any harder than running a telephone line.

BTW Another way that I have seen used is if there is a closet upstairs that lines up with one downstairs You can just drill a 1/2 inch hole and run the line that way.

running cable is not that hard but i dont think a contractor would do that he is just a guy that hires a bunch of professionals with "contracts" to build a house using their different skills

as for a modem no that wont work but there are kits you can buy for networking through phonelines and it dosent tie up the line either

Actually what you are referring to is a general contractor . A contractor is any licensed profesional in his respective trade.(electrician, plumber, carpenter, drwaller etc.) and the individual contractors are the ones that do the "hands on" work. That is why I suggested that if he wanted someone else to do the work he call an electrician.

(ah, good point crystal) see what you mean, since thats basically what they do.. anyways.. there is a phone jack right next to the -dead- pc, so if thats really true, u can network thru the phone line without any wall crushing, Im all for it.... need some more info on that first...
