XP and Win98 NTLDR

I recently installed xp on my system as a second OS to win98, on a different partition. However now i need to get rid of win98, and just leave xp on there. (sounds easy right??) Well i tried the obvious first, just format the win98 partition, however when i restarted the computer, it loaded the keyboard and mice drivers, and then gave a MBR error:
"NTLDR missing, Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart..."
I have have been reading previous posts about this nasty little error but none have really been helpful to the situation...
i dont only winxp home, and its a compaq bundled cd that came with the comp (i.e. i cant boot from it, "invalid system disk...")
i'm open to all suggestions... i have a a second win xp home machine here to work with if that helps...

The first thing you could try is make a wxp boot disk, see if it boots with it - and if it does, put the missing files back in place.
(this would be an easy task as you have another computer there)

First of all, you'll need the WinXP floppy set (because your CD does not boot). The download links for these floppies are on this page.

After you boot to these, access the Recovery Console. From here, you can perform the steps on the following page:
How to Repair the Boot Sector. (You will have to scroll down or click the link to the section about repairing the boot sector)

Essentially, you will copy the files "NTLDR" and "NTDETECT.COM" to your hard drive. If you have another computer, a copy of those files can also be found in the root of the hard drive (C:\)

edit: whoops.. forgot to add the first link

ok... copying the files from this comp to the other root directory didn't work... it just says invalid system disk... and i have taken all the other disks out... so i'm making the disks now and see how that goes.
