NDS printer to dos

A need has risen to use a nds printer with a dos program that only understands lpt1.

The nw environment is 5 and 6.
Let's call the tree 'fun', and printer object 'printer'.
Workstations are w2k.

I hear there are no more print queues in our environment, it's replaced with something else, I don't know what.

When I go onto cmd and type 'capture lpt1 p=\\fun\printer', I get an error message saying 'No print queues are serviced by the specified printer'.

Typing 'net use lpt1 \\FUN\PRINTER' says 'network path not found'. So does 'net use lpt1 \\FUN\PRINTER.CN'.

Is there any way I can map an nds printer, that doesn't have a queue (someone could tell me the alternative ways of handling printing in nds )

Probably using NDPS instead of Novell Queue based printing.

You can actually maintain queues even when using NDPS. Doing so is one solution.

Setup NDPS printer to service legacy queues:

In NWAdmin, select the NDPS printer you want to work with.
The Printer Details page appears.
Select Jobs from the Printer Control view.
Click Spooling Configuration.
Under Service Jobs from NetWare Queues, click the Add button.
A browser window appears.
Select the queue(s) you want this printer to service and click OK.
Click OK again at the Spooling +Configuration dialog.
After this you are may use capture.

Or you could try http://www.andtechnologies.com/dosprint.html (free)

This, like many other questions I've had you answer, are beyond my administrating rights.

NDPS is what we use

That dosprint looks good, I'll see to it.
Thanks.

I've never tried it, but I would like to hear how it works out.

It's strict about the program location (needs to be in %systemroot%\system32), otherwise it will give permission error.

And, the printer to be mapped, needs to be associated to the workstation.

With my rusty dos skills, I was able to print error to lpt1 (I wanted to print a file to lpt1, but it came out as error)
seems 'copy filename.txt >> lpt1:' doesn't work

But it does it's job.
