Have you cleaned the cdrom lens lately? My pioneer slot drive kept kicking cd's out. I cleaned it and alls been great since. Little dust can be very bad.

it is not the cd or cd drives...

Let me give a little history on me and bf1942...

I played it before i got all my new parts into my pc and it ran fine. After the 9800 pro was installed there was a little translucent grey bar in the top/middle of my view in every resolution. available adn would not go away.

I ignored this problem. Then i upgraded my bf1942 to 1.5. and desert combat mod to 1.5. After this, it gave me cd key invalid errors so i uninstalled.

When i went to reinstall it gets to 20% during sound.rfa and then gives me an error that it cant find something in the media and shuts the installer down.

At first you said media.rfa now you say sound.raf. Which one?

It is probaly the CD or CD-Rom. When I install SOF2, one smudge on the CD tends to screw the installation very bad.

What else can it be! I mean its a copy error. I cant think of anything else beyond DISC or cdrom that reads it. Video has nadda to do with it, and I have the 9800 runs great. But do get the latest radeon drivers as they fixed some BF 1942 specific issues with being to dark etc. That is if you get it to work again of course.

WinXP/2000? Check the Event Logs.
Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc

The system/application logs might tell you more info about the error (or furthermore you might find something else gone awry in there!)
