9700 Pro Disaster
Hey guys i just got the Powercolor 9700 Pro from Newegg i told yall about a few days ago.
Plugged it in, uninstalled the nvidia drivers, downloaded the cat 3.10s rebooted and wannet to test it.
Opened quake 3, and played it with dissapointment.
150-200 FPS cant b right, i know that card has more potential, my friends r running that game at 400 FPS.
also on Deus Ex 2, i was xpecting a little bit more performance then over my old TI4400 G4.
My other specs.
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512 Megs DDR PC2100
Gigabyte 7VAXP KT400 Chipset
400 Watt Antec True Power PSU.
Now i got 2 questions.
My friend told me that gigabyte underclocks their chipsets and that that is the bottleneck in my system, he said there is a hacked bios flash i can download to unlock the full speed, that sounds a tad fishy too me, but u never know.
Anybdy ever heard of that?
Also, could the reason for the low performance be cause i have the Molex frommy HDD split to the card? Maybe it needs more power?
Or is my rest sys specs just not good nuff even tho i doubt that.
Also im having some prob setting the refresh rate on my monitor since the 9700 pro.
When i go to the stanadrt way of changing the refresh rate and set it to 75, which is the highest my mon. takes at 1152, it wont do anything, so i read the manual and it told me i have to do a refresh rate override.
So i go to the ATI Display TAB, but the override wont let me select anything over 60 HZ.
Anybdy know a fix for that?
Do ya think that maybe the 3.10s r crappy drivers? Should i rather try the 3.9s or the omegas? , i heard the 3.9s beat the 3.10s.
Thx alot for any info ya can provide.

For dx8 speed go nvidia. For good dx8 + REAL dx9 speed all ati. After dx8 got so fast-they aimed for dx9, only sensible it is the future of gaming. And alot of the gpu features are "off" in dx8. Its a dx9 card. So some of what you paid for is dormant in dx8 games. I wouldnt use such a old game to judge for this reason. Fireup 3dmark 2003 once and compair. If scores low then worry. Or try atleast a semi- modern game. Also make sure if going for fps that the card is set to AA and AF off Trueform II off. And texture prefrence to performance. Then test again.

Personally I avoid gigabyte so I wouldnt know. But only thing hacked bios's usually do is enable oclocking. At stock speeds I cant see it doing anything to help. Besides underclocked chipset? Huh? Either its running full steam or its not. Its a chipset. I mean some settings are more aggresive but not the same thing. Like Bank interleave on sdr systems and stuff. But not literally clocking the chipset lower. Never heard of that before. My asus actually slightly OCLOCKs (FSB over 1 mhz) by default and runs vcore at slightly higher settings stock.

Quake 3 is a very old game that favors Nvidia cards.
