only 16 colours available

This is something probably really easy but its killing me..
I picked up a re-conditioned compaq deskpro p3 with no operating system. I loaded win98 and had probs from the start(sound and vid drivers) sorted the sound but I can only get 16 colours?? The system has a AGP card Matrox MGA G200A. I think that this card is not seen, so I only get basic onboard graphics.. So I reckon a BIOS prob? The display properties say Standard PCI graphics adapter (VGA) It thinks I have the best driver for this hardware and does not see it as a Matrox AGP? Help would be really good right now cos its going in the trash soon.....

Try reinstalling the video drivers. If that doesn't work, before you throw it away, let me have it. I can give it a good home and will pay for shipping costs from wherever to Texas. Good Luck

but do you think the BIOS and stuff is all ok?
What can I check?
Why doesnt the Matrox card be seen or do you think that it is the standard PCI graphics adapter?
