i don't hate them...persay. I think they are the best of those types of companies. I just don't like them either. I think that their software packages are way to bloated, although that can be fixed by a simple re-install of windows. also i think they are overpriced if you are buying one straight up as a home-built computer of the exact same specs can be had for significantly less, although the payment plan can be nice if you can't buy a computer upfront.

I like dell in the same way as originel. They're fine for people who want a service package, or don't know much about computers. For enthusiasts, no.
If someone came to me and said "What sort of computer should I buy for my office?" it would be dell. If it was for games etc, I'd say mesh.
That would be after offering to build them one myself of course

I just do...
Firstly because they don't sell AMD!
Next are very deceptive in their marketing. Their PC's are sleek and stylish but are filled with a heap of crap in them. The average buyer most likely will be fooled by this along with their appealing rebate options.

Nothing wrong with dell from a corporate perspective. Build my own at home but we're a dell company. When I order a warranty part, RMA etc.. it is always here the next day. The only problem I have had with dell in general (we have problems but we also have 14K users) is a design flaw in the C600 series laptops. In the docking station the laptops, specifically the HDD's run extremely hot. Ultimately they fail. You can even get an error code with the laptop out of the docking station. Other than that they have been pretty solid. For home consumer based equipment, I could see getting a dell for someone not too computer savvy. Support is good, dependable for the most part. The top end gaming machines are even pretty nice, just overpriced.

I think dell is a good company, they do a great job in making pc's for the average consumer. As for the rest who have the know how to build, and repair pc's, I wouldn't ever go buya prebuilt one.
Main reason for that is even if it were custom built the way I wanted, I wouldn't be saving money. Most companys like that will order in cheap memory that usually only get's sold at wholesale to computer manafacturer's and will end up being generic. Video cards are the same way, at times you will see onboard, and cheaper video cards.
Sure they work, but I wouldn't ever go out and buy one for a lot, I'd rather pay the extra money since some of the video cards that are not so brand name will use generic memory while companys like ati and msi, two of my favorite video card company's, they use samsung memory which is good for over clocking and is just better overall memory.
The cases I suppose don't look bad, but I haven't seen one that doesn't have some propriatary parts in it.
I had put a lot into my computer tho, so I didn't save a lot of money. However it's what I needed.
For the rest who just need a pc to run a few tasks for them like general home computer tasks or business tasks, then they do make great computers.

I recommend Dell to all my clients, home or office. Great company, and great product. I'd use them at home but at this point it's not worth it since I already have machines I can upgrade and so forth.
