We have -- and like -- the Fuji Finepix 3800 (3.2mp). It's very compact, lightweight, yet not so small that it doesn't "feel right" when held.
With a 128mb mem chip, you can take roughly forty 60-second avi video clips with sound. Camera includes built-in flash, optical+electronic zoom, takes four AA batteries, and will run on alkalines but you really are much off with the Metal Hydride rechargables.
We went on a ten day camping trip last June, and one set of fully charged Me Hydrides lasted the whole trip, no problem. Alkalines might last for several hours of use... but not days... esp if using the flash.
The batteries are expensive, but you'll get hundreds of charges out of them, plus there are "fast charge" chargers available (run maybe $25), and you can recharge the batteries in under an hour.
I'm pretty sure you can find the 3800 for well under $350 if you shop around.
