Outdoors Work stations cannot access server!

As of yesterday I inherted the duty of sorting out our network in my AutoCAD lab. We run our server on an old POS compaq running win2000 server. The thirteen odd computers are connected (sadly) on a 10 baseT switch.

My problem is that while the workstations can ping the server they cant retreive files and data from the server. And on the server end. It cant ping any of the work stations.

As far as I know, there is no firewall, unless windows turned it's on (I know next to nothing about win2k, only abuot XP).

Does anyone know what my problem could be?

Do you have active directory services installed on the server? Or is it just a peer to peer network? You may need to set permissions for the shares depending on the type.

...

To tell you the truth, I was never told what the previous admin had done. I think there's some sort of directory service installed, but there's so many different things installed there, it has apache, something called cygwin. I'm pretty sure it's not just p2p. I'm going to try to get ahold of teh previous admin. It's not possible to fix this without figuring out what he did.

ah! One other thing recently our network was swept with w32.pinifi, and we think we've gotten rid of it. Would that effect being able to access the data?

When pinging from the server, are you pinging by computer name or by computer IP?

When accssing the server from a workstation, do you get an error about permission denied or more like that the server can not be found?

Well then it seems u definitely have active directory services on the server. Here's a guide you can follow.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...manadsteps.asp

I hope u have an admin password for the server.
