old computer boot probs

ths old pc i have will now not boot from a cd, its a old compaq presario 4910. all it says is invalid system disk because i formatted the drive. when i use a boot disk and get the cd rom to work it will not read any cd in the drive.. its sayin

CDR101: Not ready reading drive R
Abort , Retry , Fail?

it does say
Fail on INT 24
when i press F

any ideas because i need to reinstall the os on here

i had a similar experience. A 2 speed cdrom would not work unless it has the correct driver installed. As in the motherboard could boot from a cd but the drive was so old it wouldnt have a bar it and ignored all attempts to function directly from the bios. Try using a newer cdrom to install the os then swap it back.

If I remember correctly, the Presario needs a specific driver for the CD - a generic one such as oakcd don't work. Try changing the cd driver on your boot floppy using Compaq Softpaq SP7330.EXE - can be found here :
