BSOD's....Argh.

Hey all, I just upgraded my processor from a 2600+ to a 2800+. I can't get it to boot up to Windows now or it won't install a new copy of it either. It has been idling for the awhile @ 53C (127F) and the heatsink feels fairly warm so I know the heat is dissipating through it good. I've always used thermal pads before on Athlon systems but, now I can't because Antec doesn't make them anymore. So I used Arctic Silver III instead. I seems about 3-4 degrees cooler than what my 2600 ran so I guess it's fine. So I honestly don't think it could be a heat problem. It always gives me the same BSOD right before it gets to the Windows boot up screen. Then if I try to reinstall Windows it always gives me the BSOD right when the status of it says Starting Windows....(this is before it even asks you where you want to install Windows). It gives me this BSOD everytime:

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC000001D, 0x80A65F37, 0xF789DF9C, 0XF789DBEC)

So what do you all think the problem could be? I really need your help....I've stressed myself out. TIA.

ok..let's start at the beginning...

after you installed new processor, did the system recognize it correctly? (in the bios, I mean)

Also, tell me the name of your motherboard...which revision, etc...also, the bios version...

First off I had to clear the CMOS before it would even post. Before I cleared the CMOS the Diagnostic LED said C1 which is a memory error. Then after I cleared the CMOS I went and sat everything backup and it recognized it as a 2800+ like it should. Also, I should say that it did actually boot Windows once....it got up to the point where it said preparing network connections which is right before the login screen....I have an Epox 8RDA+ Rev. 1.1 w/ the latest BIOS revision. For memory I have two 512mb sticks of Geil PC3200...I've tried relaxing the timings on the memory and bumping the voltage of the DIMMs up to 2.7. I've also got a 350 watt PSU. I don't think it could be a power issue because if it was trying to draw more than 300 watts my UPS would blow a fuse.

Have you tried this yet? (taken from epox website)

PC3200 Memory Not Stable
If your PC3200 memory is not stable try the following BIOS settings:

Memory Frequency = 100%
Memory Timing = Expert
T(RAS) = 7
T(RCD) = 3
T(RP) = 3
CAS Latency = 2.5

Adjust the memory frequency above until you reach the resulting frequency of 200MHz (for PC3200).

Yes...that is what I have it set at now because that is the default timings on my ram. This is so strange because I just took out 1 of the sticks of ram and unplugged everything but, the bare essentials and I moved the 1 stick around in all of the slots...it kept on giving me NTDETECT Error. So then I plugged everything back in to the way it was before...low and behold...what shows up? Windows Server 2003 boot screen like it should....then it just gave me another BSOD.

Well, what I did was I formatted the hdd because I thought it might be that. So I did that on another machine and tried to install Windows. It got about half way through copying the files when along came another BSOD. I put the 2600 back in and it works fine. So I just thought that I had gotten a dud and I sent it back to newegg. I didn't think it could be anything else....Thanks for the help. :-)

don't get a 2800, get a 2500 barton core, as you can change them to 200FSB (400ddr) and up the voltage to 1.8v and you have yourself a XP3200 barton for £50!
