HELP hardware, mobo or vid card problem??

Asus A7V KT133 socket A Motherboard
Socket A Chipset: VIA KT133
1.2 Ghz
384 pc133 ram
Geforce2 mx 400 64 mb
300 W antec w/smart cooling
creative Live! sound card
cd burner
cd-rom drive
20 GB hard drive
80GB hard drive

i just got a new video card from eVGA, fx 5900 SE (XT), i removed my Geforce2 and inserted this card in the AGP slot (4x) then i turned on the computer, as usual the first thing i saw was the name of the video card, then it went black and absolutly nothing happened. since the minimum requirements for this card is 300w i thought that maybe i didnt have enought power so i unplugged my backup hard drive , my cd-rom and my cd burner and tried again. this time after the video card was stated it went to test the memory (press del to enter setup) i noticed that were it was supposed to be marked 1200mhz it was marked 0mhz. i thought i had screwed up my mobo or something so i took out my fx 5900 and put back in the Geforce 2, everything is working fine now.

i also tried to change my bios settings. the manual said to change the AGP aperture to 4mb and PCI latency to 128 but it didnt do a thing.

i also flashed my bios to 1009 Asus (recent).

is this a problem with the power supply, the mobo compability, a defect vid card or a driver problem with VIA??

I would guess power supply.

cant be a driver issue..cuz its not into windows yet..so it hasnt even gotten to the driver stage yet.

Could be PSU, although that Antec 300 should handle it fine since the rest of your system doesn't seem too power hungry. Could also be the card itself. I would try to load fail safe defaults in your bios and see if that has any effect.

a power supply failure is possible. btw, you didnt mentioned the specs of your current power supply. some says, gfx cards really requires a lot of power. in some sites, gfx cards are rated at 75W against radeons and MX cards which are rated at 30 - 40W only.

Power Rating: 300 W
Input Voltage Supported: 115, 230 V
Motherboards Supported: ATX

*if i do change my PSU what should i look for?

what about the compability of my motherboard does the one i have appear to be good enought for my video card

maybe i can answer this one. it's in the BIOS menu. just look for it in the screen that appears after you hit Del key to enter the BIOS.

these values are the values automatically loaded by the bios once selected. so you would not change the settings one by one.
these values are set to the very least among the options.

usually the power rating and rail voltages.
