basic problem is killing me!

I'm working on an XP Pro OS on a compaq laptop. This system cannot browse the internet. it has an IP address and gateway. It wont ping anything on the outside, yet it can see everything on the companys network in another state. (DENVER and NASHVILLE are connected via routers). None of the computers on the local network will show up unless you search for them specificly. Only computers from Nashville will show up when you browse the network. I have never seen anything like this before. The user was in another state and logged onto the local network for that office. When he was done, he logged off and returned to Denver. Now he can only see computers from the office he visited and he has no ability to browse. I cannot ping IP addresses or websites from this laptop. And why computers in his local office wont show up is beyond me. I removed him and rejoined him from the domain as well as uninstalled and reinstalled TCP/IP. I'v checked all IP's and subnets and gateways. This system is set up just like all the others yet it behaves differently. Any ideas of where to even start?

If you run route print does it show more than one default Gateway (row entry starting with 0.0.0.0)? if so, that may be your problem.

You use a router to connect to other sites, do you use this same router to connect to the Internet and is it a leased line and/or VPN?

Does this machine have any form of software firewall installed (or did it ever have Zone Alarm installed)?

I ran "route print" and it showed only one default gateway of 192.168.1.1 which is the inside of my firewall.

The offices connect via the internet using Watchguard firewalls to provide the protection.

Zone alarm has never been installed.

My only solution is a complete reload. Any genisus out there that can tell me any differently I would love to hear it. There has to be at leas one 8 year old out there that can help me!

If you can't find a difference in the workstation station station setup then perhaps it is within the WatchGuard firewall(s).

Since you didn't answer directly, I'll have to assume the WatchGuard firewall is your way to the Internet and to the other office site(s).

I would check the IP of the affected machine, power it down. Then change a working computer to that IP address to see if it has the same limitations as the original problem machine. If not, then it is not likely the firewall unless the firewall uses some form of authentication that is still unique to the original problem machine.
